Thursday STEM Day!
With no school on Friday we moved our STEM activity to today. We started talking about the walking rainbow last week, so everyone was super excited to see how it worked.

We started with looking at how we needed to set up the experiment.

Here are our jars of water.
David added the red food colouring.
 Sophie put in the yellow.
Hugh did the blue for us.
We recorded our first round of observations. Basically adding the colours to our diagram and noting how many colours we used and how many jars.

We have some awesome data collectors in room 2.
We recorded our second round of observations as our colours started to move or walk.

Unfortunately we ran out of time to see the final product, but we did see hints of colours mixing and our rainbow starting to appear.
We looked at the above slide and talked about primary colours and how they mix. We talked about why our activity was called the walking rainbow.
I promised room 2 I would post a final picture of the walking rainbow tonight or tomorrow so keep a look out.

Walking Rainbow

Next week for our STEM activity we will be doing the walking rainbow experiment. I showed room 2 the below pictures today and we talked a little about how the rainbow colours appeared. I told them I would post the pictures here so you could have a discussion about it this weekend. I'm looking forward to some ideas or answers on Monday.

How Much Rubbish Do We Bring to School?
Our big questions this term for Inquiry is "How can we take care of our environment?". Today we saved all our trash in our lunch boxes and sorted it at the end of the day. We talked about the different categories we might need and made our chart. After it was all sorted we counted and tallied how many of each type of rubbish we had. We found out that as a class we had 38 pieces of rubbish. We talked about how that would really add up in a week, month, or year. Room 2 was able to tell me that we need to REDUCE the amount of rubbish we bring everyday. Maybe you can come up with some good ways to do this at home this weekend.

Marshmallow Shapes in Maths Today!
We have been learning about 2 dimensional plain shapes in Maths the past few weeks. Today we had the challenge and treat of creating the shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows. We recorded how many sides and vertices each of the shapes had. I was very proud of how hard Room 2 worked on this today.

Winter Sports

All of the kids in room 2 have started talking about their winter sports starting up.
I would love to get a chance to come out to some of the games and see the kids play. If you wouldn't mind letting me know the game schedules that would be great.
Double Trouble!!
We learned a new dice game in maths today called double trouble. We are practicing becoming fast and fluent with our basic facts.

Cross Country practice will be starting today. Please make sure your child has the proper shoes for running. They are able to run barefoot if they would like to. We will be practicing every day after lunch.
